RUN FOR THE WORLD proved to be a massive success, raising £2,400 on the day, and a further £1,800 is expected to come from collections boxes, sponsor forms and corporate sponsorship funds yet to be handed in.
The 5th annual edition of the event smashed its record for participants as 258 runners took part this year. These kind-hearted runners took part in the five or ten kilometre dash along Morecambe Promenade, helping raise awareness for two good causes.
This year, the UK run was supporting Ambassadors in Sport, which uses football to help children re-engage with education around the world. In addition, the run raised money for Christians Against Poverty, a national debt-counselling charity, with a network of 150 centres based in local churches.
Martin Bateman, from Run 4 The World, said: “We started with ten people in 2007,and the run this year was the biggest ever in numbers and was a great family event. It was fantastic to see both the young and old taking part.”
The eldest competitor on the day was an incredible 93 years old, whilst the youngest, who was carried around the course, was aged just eight months. “It’s only a short distance, but it goes a long way to helping the disadvantaged, locally and around the world. It has just been a massive success and I would like to thank everyone who helped to make it such a successful event”, added Mr Bateman.
Representatives from the two charities took part on the day, and gave an insight about what their organisations do to impact people’s lives.
Here's an overview of the first 25 places home. Remember, our volunteers did the best job they could in recording and ordering the numbers as you all crossed the finish line. We recorded the finishers up to 92nd place. Download the full list for 5km and 10km here.
